HISTORY
The Early Years
West Coburg Bowling Club was founded in the latter half of 1947 during the post-war years when all sections of the community were affected by shortages of materials. The building trade in particular, was among the worst to suffer, as timber, hardware and other materials were almost unprocurable. In this unforgiving climate, it seemed that the founders of the club could not have chosen a more inopportune time to embark on the task of transforming the rubbish strewn, weed overgrown area of land allocated to them into a bowling green, and at the time erecting a building to accommodate the expected influx of members. None of this small band of enthusiasts could have foreseen the difficulties. West Coburg Bowling Club now furnishes four sides in the Bowls Victoria Pennant competitions.

New Greens
In 2008 WCBC decided to put in synthetic greens. This decision was necessitated by the ongoing drought, the cost of water and the cost of looking after grass greens. The Club successfully applied for a Federal Government Grant which paid for half of the cost of the new greens and the rest of the money was raised by a bank loan. The type of surface chosen was needle punched carpet which is soft underfoot and allows all year round bowling.
The photos on this page show the grass green with deteriorating edges, the installation of the new carpet and the completed green.
